We all know the beginning of the speech.  “Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation: conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” 

But it is the last line of President Lincoln’s two minute Gettysburg Address that we should not only know but should also use to guide us in our decisions regarding the government of ourselves. 

“It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before , that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion, that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom. . . and that government of the people. . .by the people. . .for the people. . . shall not perish from the earth. "

On this Memorial Day, I want to highlight the idea that this nation “conceived in liberty” has slowly been losing that liberty. If enabled to continue on its current path, it will certainly “perish from the earth.” And that those that died will have died in vain. 

Shame on us if we let their last full measure of devotion be for a cause we are no longer willing to fight for. 

As a Nation, We Said it was Worth it...

For the last several decades, this great country has tried to balance security and liberty.

We have instituted programs that have tried to give financial security to our elderly.  All it cost was to take a little individual liberty from each of us.  As a nation, we said it was worth it. 

We have created a federal agency to give us environmental security.  All it cost was to take a little individual liberty from each of us.  As a nation, we said it was worth it. 

We have created a federal department to give us educational security.  All it cost was to take a little individual liberty from each of us.  As a nation, we said it was worth it. 

Our nation has created a monetary system that put the financial decisions of our nation in the hands of a few for our nation’s economic security.  All it cost was to take a little individual liberty from each of us.   As a nation, we said it was worth it.

Our courts said we had to take prayer out of our schools to secure equal treatment.  All it cost was to take a little religious liberty from each of us.  As a nation, we said it was worth it. 

Our courts have given the legal right to people to kill their children before birth to ensure our right to choose our own emotional health care.  All it cost was the liberty of every unborn child killed and the soul of our nation.  As a nation, we said it was worth it.

We have instituted a national health care system to give us security in our health care.  All it cost was to take a little individual liberty from each of us.  As a nation, we said it was worth it. 

Our Department of Justice has started to secretly demand that private companies give up their customer’s personal information for the nation’s security.  All it cost was to take a little individual liberty from each of us.  As a nation, we said it was worth it. 

The same justice department has searched and taken the personal and professional communications from our journalists to ensure our nation’s security.  All it cost was to take a little individual liberty from each of us and erode the freedom of our press.  As a nation, we said it was worth it.  

What is the cost?

Some in our government are trying to implement reasonable gun control to make us all more secure.  All it will cost is a little individual liberty from each of us. 

Our government has signed on to a UN treaty that will put decisions about our right to bear arms in the hands of other nations for the security of the world.  All it will cost is a little liberty from each of us.

What I believe...

I don’t believe that our forefathers, eleven score and seventeen years ago, wanted us as a nation to pay such a high cost for security. 

I don’t believe that this is the “unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced” that President Lincoln referred to.

I don’t believe that this is the cause that the reported 7,863 Americans that died and the 27,224 that were wounded in that 3 day battle at Gettysburg gave their last full measure of devotion for.

I do believe that we again “are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.”

On Memorial Day, honor those who fought for your liberty and freedom

We as a nation have been blessed to have men and women sacrifice so much for our liberty.

Think about their sacrifice and thank them.
