An article by WTMJ-TV tells how three kids fought a thief who stole their SUV while they were sitting inside the vehicle.
“A 9-year-old boy hit a car thief over the head with an iPad and his 16-year-old sister choked the thief and called 911 until he bailed out of the stolen SUV…”
Good for them.
But that’s not why I’m writing this post.
The father, who ran inside a pizza shop, left the SUV running. And unlocked. With his three kids in the car. Running and unlocked. With a 4 year old, a 9 year old and a 16 year old inside.
Luckily, the kids were unharmed. Physically at least. Who knows what this may do to them emotionally.
What was the father thinking?
Yes, there was a 16 year old in the car. Old enough to watch the other kids while dad was gone. But why leave the car unlocked? Seriously!
I don’t agree with leaving a car running either. It’s a waste of gas. And a good way to have your vehicle stolen from you. (Which is exactly what happened.) But at least he should have locked all the doors. Always lock vehicle doors. Whether you’re in the car or outside of the car.

Lock. The. Doors.
Their story could have had an extremely tragic ending. If the carjacker had a gun and started shooting. If he crashed the car while trying to make his get-away. If the kids were of a different mindset and simply sat in the car while the thug drove off to who-knows-where. Never to be seen again.
I’m impressed with the kids. They chose to fight the thug off. They even mentioned that they didn’t see a gun. That tells me that they were aware and paying attention.
But this story should never have made the news. Because this incident should never have happened.
Lock your doors. Always.
